About 250,000 children attend over 800 private schools across New York City. Until recently these schools have had to pay out of pocket for their students’ rights to safety. Thanks to a recent innovative legal policy, the city will now be able to fund security guards at private schools. The policy goes into effect as of September 2016.
Private schools have a unique need for enhanced security. Often religious in nature, these schools can become the victim of political and social tensions. Children deserve to learn in an environment that is as stress free as possible.
Guards are a necessary part of the school staff. They monitor everyone who enters and exits the building which is especially critical on the hectic NYC streets. Guards maintain safety at dismissal times as students cross busy intersections.
The school security guard oversees the entire building, monitoring within and around the premises. All children, regardless of which type of school they attend, deserve to feel protected and secure.
The city has recognized the urgency of guarding private schools as the initiative is expected to cost almost $20 million for the first year. Schools with 300 to 499 students will get reimbursed for the cost of one unarmed security guard, while schools with 500 to 999 students will get enough money for two guards. Schools with larger populations are entitled to additional security guards. Administrators can apply with The Department of Citywide Administrative Services to determine if they are entitled for the program.
