It’s not just a top-secret government thing anymore. Companies increasingly issue employee ID cards, in large part for security reasons. And in today’s technologically-advanced world, an ID card is no longer just a piece of paper placed inside a sturdy, transparent plastic cover. Nowadays, an ID card may mean an embedded chip, or a barcode/QR code is included. This enables digital identification of all card carriers, bringing security up to a high level of tracking.

The benefits of employee identity cards include:

1) Knowing Who’s On Staff. If ID card wearers are employees, their ID card will reflect their status.

2) Preventing security breaches: Criminals keen on breeching a company’s security face greater challenges if entrants require an ID card. Even if they try the temporary guest ID card route, they are  required to undergo security questioning, and, if granted a guest ID card, will stand out because their card clearly marks their temporary status.  Therefore, any guest trying to breach security from within the walls of the company will be more suspect.

3) Categorizing Employees by Security Levels. An entry-level receptionist will likely not have the same access rights as the CEO, and this can be reflected in the employee ID card.

4) Tracking Entry/Exist Times. Should security become suspect, exits and entries can be tracked via the chip on an employee ID card. While this might sound very Big Brother, it can serve the employees’ benefit in case of an emergency need to exit or enter – loved ones can know they were in the building during certain hours, or whether they had left. In addition, this tracking system allows police officers to track criminals’ whereabouts.

5) Company Unity. An ID card can be an “identification” card or an “identity” card. An employee ID card serves both functions, and the “identity” aspect signifies a sense of belonging to your company, unrelated directly to security. An identity card, thereby, enhances bonding among employees. Likewise, an employee ID card facilitates easier initial social interaction by displaying one’s name and title prominently. (And to boot, some companies “secure” deals with vendors for discounts for their employees. Talk about employee conversation topics – did you know that shoe store gives us 20% off?) All in all, employee ID cards serve well for company culture.
